The Letters You Need to Know
Medicare Part A covers in-patient hospital stays. Medicare Part B is coverage for outpatient medical services like visits to the doctor and lab tests. Together Part A and Part B are sometimes referred to as "Traditional Medicare" or "Original Medicare". Medicare Part D is for prescription drug coverage.
What is Medicare Part C?
Medicare Part C plans are also known as Medicare Advantage Plans or MA plans. For these plans, private insurers have been authorized by the government to offer insurance coverage that bundles Medicare Part A and Part B. Many MA plans also include prescription drug coverage. Most MA plans follow the HMO or the PPO insurance structure.
What Medicare Part C Plans Cover
A MA plan may provide coverage and services that Original Medicare doesn't offer. Each MA plan is different.
Here are some examples of additional benefits that a Medicare Advantage Plan may include:
- Vision coverage
- Dental insurance
- Hearing care
- Transportation to medical appointments
- Meal delivery
- Gym membership
- Home safety modifications like stairlifts and wheelchair ramps
- The assistance of a home health aide
- Cost Considerations
Your MA plan will have out-of-pocket costs like co-pays and/or co-insurance. Before you choose a Medicare Part C Plan, it's important to compare the MA plans available in your area since the plans have different out-of-pocket costs.
